What is Phenylpiracetam?

Phenylpiracetam (also known as Phenotropil and Carphedon) is a potent nootropic drug belonging to the racetam family of chemical compounds, which includes the well known drug piracetam. In a 2007 study, Russian scientists compared the effects of Phenylpiracetam with Piracetam in rats with induced cerebral ischemia, and found that, after restoration of blood flow, the rats maintained better cognitive functions after treatment with Phenylpiracetam than with Piracetam [f].

A 2011 study reported that, after administration of Phenylpiracetam, it was possible to treat rats with Scopolamine without observing the memory loss that would typically occur. It also found that administration of Phenylpiracetam significantly increased the density of dopamine receptors [g].

In the same year, another study in Wistar rats reported better maintenance of cognitive function after treatment with Phenylpiracetam, despite experimentally induced immune stress [h].

This was followed up in 2013 by a further study in Wistar rats, which also found that Phenylpiracetam improved the animals’ ability to cope with a wider range of stressful situations [i].

A 2017 study in obese rats found that Phenotropil was useful in preventing fat accumulation [j].

A 2020 study in male rats reported that Phenylpiracetam had benefits as a neuroprotective agent, as well as anti-inflammatory benefits [k].

Human Studies

A 2010 paper reviewed human clinical trials, and reported that phenylpiracetam appeared to have a positive effect on various cognitive disabilities (such as those caused by traumatic brain injury), and also that it improved concentration, focus and energy levels in healthy individuals (without diagnosed health conditions) [l].
